Get Ready to Level-Up — Girls Make Games Summer Camp Comes to Nintendo of America for the First Time
March 27, 2019
Girls Make Games (GMG), the international program working to increase gender diversity in the gaming industry, is excited to announce a new summer camp location for 2019. For the first time, Nintendo of America is teaming up with Girls Make Games to host one of its game development summer camps at the Nintendo of America headquarters in Redmond, WA. The camp is designed to inspire and educate girls ages 8–17 who are interested in pursuing a career in the video game industry.
“The idea that girls are not interested in playing or making games just isn’t true. Stop by a GMG workshop and you’ll find a room filled with passionate creatives, teeming with ideas the world is yet to see. Their biggest challenge has never been lack of motivation, it’s limited access to opportunities” shared Laila Shabir, CEO and co-founder of Girls Make Games.
“It is my dream that every girl who wants to make a game, or work in the industry can access a path to it. We have our work cut out for us, but with the help of industry leaders like Nintendo of America, we can move the needle in the right direction” continued Shabir.
During the 3-week long flagship summer camp, which takes place July 8–26 this year, middle and high school girls will learn how to design, program and pitch their own video games. Participants will work in teams to create fully functional games, meet and interact with video game industry professionals in the region.
Nintendo will also provide scholarship opportunities for GMG summer camp participants, along with providing mentoring from leading female executives from across the company. Nintendo will showcase the many different roles that bring a video game to life, from coding and development to related fields in the video game industry like design, public relations, marketing, legal and finance.
“Our partnership with Girls Make Games builds upon Nintendo’s ongoing commitment to put smiles on people’s faces and foster experiences of inclusivity,” said Devon Pritchard, Nintendo of America’s Executive Vice President of Business Affairs.
“I participated in the Girls Make Games Demo Day last year and was able to see firsthand how gaming and game development positively influences the lives of girls. I’m looking forward to continuing Nintendo’s efforts of showing the different types of opportunities available to those interested in the video game industry.”
